Fourth Grade's Star Spangled Project!

The fourth grade have been learning our National Anthem, and the history behind the song, the writing of the song, and the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key's epic poem. We took time in Music class to draw a replica of the flag that flew over Fort McHenry during the battle on Sept. 13, 1814, and that gave proof through the night who was winning the War of 1812. The flag measured 30'x42', and had 15 stars, and 15 stripes. One stripe was cut out and given to a general as a souvenir following the battle of Fort McHenry.

You can see the actual flag on display at the Smithsonian's American History Museum in Washington, D.C. The flag has been recently restored and preserved, and a brand new exhibit has been created around the flag. Learn more about the flag and the Star Spangled Banner Project by clicking here.
