Academics
THIS MONTH IN FIRST GRADE
The First Grade classroom is a flurry of activity. Advent,
preparations for Christmas, and academic challenges make each day exciting and
busy.
A trip to The Rialto to see Skippyjon Jones was a great way to start the month
of December. First grade went to the Science Lab for a science lesson about
magnets presented by the 6th grade . We have been practicing and preparing to
give our parents a very special Christmas performance.
Before the month is over we will perform at two Christmas programs. We will be
making Christmas greetings to send to people in Hospice. At “Cocoa and Carols”
we will hang our ornaments on the Christmas tree and sing Christmas carols with
all of the students. We will make ornaments for our 8th grade buddies, (shhh,
it’s a secret). We will be talking about Advent and working hard to get ready,
in our hearts and in our actions, for the birthday of Jesus.
In Reading the children are getting more comfortable with
independant reading. They like to read with a partner because they can show
their friends what they can do. They can read! It’s very exciting. Their
practice with word familes, rhyming, and listening for sound patterns is making
them more fluent readers.
The Math addition facts are becoming more automatic as the
children practice and drill. New strategectingies are being added to speed up
facts drills. We are graphing and reading and collecting data from charts. Trips
to the math centers help to reinforce these and other math concepts. The at-home
drill has given them confidence.
It’s great to have parents who share the excitement with the
children. We will be praying for the King of Peace to be with us in the
classroom and at home as we get closer to and celebrate Christmas.
CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS!
