THIS MONTH IN
FIRST GRADE
March is here and our Lenten promises are a part of our Religion lessons.
We have already planned and ministered at two masses. We will also lead the
school in daily prayer for a week and present the stations of the cross for the
2nd, 3rd , and 4th grades this month.
We are beginning a new trimester and it seems like there is always something
new to learn or do. Dr. Suess is celebrated in our classroom and library
literature this month. We received many new books from the Book Fair profits.
They have been added to our class library and can be used for weekly book
reports . Good readers make good writers and good writers make good readers.
Reading and writing go hand in hand. Since the students have developed their
phonics, spelling, and english skills, writing is an adventure they are ready to
take on. They are improving and becoming more creative and confident about
expressing themselves in written form. The weekly book reports are helping them
to express their thoughts beyond one sentence explanations.
We are going to be improving our Math skills in a number of practical ways.
Some of the focus will be on geometry and fractions. There will be more
strategies to learn for addition and subtraction. It is still important for the
children to drill addition and subtraction facts at home. In our daily routines
we are doing 1-2 minute mini lessons on coins and their values. This can be done
at home as well.
This month we will be taking a trip to Holy Cross Early Learning Center to
with our facts and activities about the country of Brazil. The food, music,
animals, geography, and culture were so much fun to share at our Cultural Fair
that we would like to do it again
We are excited to be having a step-up day for the Kindergarten students in
our class. It will be great for our Holy Cross friends to see what they can
expect in First Grade next year. The dynamics and positive experiences are ideal
here at St. Mary Nativity for any student. We are so blessed!
Happy Spring!
